Recipe for Baseball-shaped cake balls

Disclaimer: I’m not a chef. At all. Period.

So I sort of pieced this together from several sources:

  2. Pinterest images
  3. common sense

But I can’t guarantee that this will work. I’ve posted the pic that I found on Pinterest and sort of guessed about how to adapt the cake ball recipe to create these lovely basket-ball-shaped cakes. If your secret pal is a volleyball coach, soccer coach, or baseball coach, you’re on your own, Jack! So here’s the recipe I sort of pieced together:

  • 1 (18.25 ounce) package cake mix
  • 1 sixteen-ounce container of Betty Crocker prepared cream cheese frosting
  • 1 three-ounce bar of orange confectioners’ coating
  • black icing (one of those tubes-o-frosting might work, if it’s fine-tipped)

  1. Prepare the cake mix according to package directions using any of the recommended pan sizes. When cake is done, crumble while warm into a large bowl, and stir in the frosting until well blended.
  2. Melt orange coating in a glass bowl in the microwave, or in a metal bowl over a pan of simmering water, stirring occasionally until smooth.
  3. Use a melon baller or small scoop to form balls of the cake mixture. Dip the balls in orange coating using a toothpick or fork to hold them. Place on waxed paper to set.
  4. Once they’re dry, decorate them with the black icing, to look like basketballs

Hopefully, if all goes as it should, these will turn out to be the perfect gift for your secret pal who coaches basketball! But remember my disclaimer… try one first to make sure it tastes okay before you pawn them off on your secret pal… 😉

    Those are too cute!

    • I can’t take credit for them, but thanks anyway. I just found this image on Pinterest and did a little research to figure out how one might make them. I’m not even sure this recipe works, but I was talking to a friend at work today about how his wife makes cake balls and trying to figure out how I’m going to do them…
